Art Quilt , Wind Tossed Tulips , Quilted Applique , Wall Hanging , Mixed Medium, Fiber Art by Sally Manke, Handmade, Floral Room Decor
Fiber Art depicts springtime in Michigan and so many other locations. These tulips are from my split stone flower beds my husband built by hand. The colorful blooms are caught by our ever present breeze off Lake Michigan. Even when the breeze is cold, our tulips indicate warmer weather is on the way.
Each colorful blossom, green leaf and stems are cut from my stash of hand dyed and batik fabrics. They are layered then bonded to the midnight blue batik back ground. An assortment of threads quilt the bouquet to the backing, batting and background fabric. Sashiko quilt stitching (it looks like hand quilting) gives movement and depth to the dark background. Fabric paints give dimension and texture to both blossoms and foliage.
Precisely stitched teeny, tiny piping accents the design between the two outer borders. Double fold biding finishes the outer edge.
This piece was juried and accepted at the International Quilt Association Houston Quilt Show and Market. It was featured in the “In Full Bloom” exhibit in October and November, 2015.
